The Literacy Initiatives Day was made possible by a federal grant (#90LO0069) from the Child Care Bureau, Administration on Children, Youth and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in the amount of $998,029 which represents 80% of $1,191,126 total allocation. This initiative is solely the responsibility of Project PLUS (Ken-Som ACCESS) and does not represent official views of the funding agency.

Program Description:

Born to Read is a statewide early literacy program, created to ensure that Maine's youngest children, ages 0 -5 years, are read aloud to daily and begin school excited about books and ready to learn. BTR provides training, books, and support to childcare providers, volunteer readers, parents, and home visitors throughout the state.

Existing Collaborative Relationships:

BTR works in partnership with RSVP in the central Maine area to provide Volunteer readers to area providers. Other partnerships that give BTR delivery a range of expertise and a means to reach children, families, and providers include Maine Office of Child Care and Head Start, University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Maine Roads to Quality.

Program Description:

Augusta Title I serve students in Kindergarten through Grade 3 who are at-risk for school failure in literacy and math. In addition to parent newsletters and a home reading program, families of our students are invited to parent-child workshops, field trips, parent education opportunities and family literacy nights.

Maine Public Broadcasting's Ready To Learn television service is part of a national effort to improve the readiness of young children through the reach of public broadcasting.  The core of Ready To Learn is non-violent, commercial-free, educational children's programming, extensive outreach services, including workshops for parents and early childhood professionals, and distribution of children's books and PBS Families magazine.

Program Description:

Raising Readers.    Promotes reading aloud to children in Maine ages birth to 5 years. We give Family Practice and Pediatric providers beautiful new books to give to children at well child visits 2 months to 5 years. For newborns, Raising Readers give books in canvas totes to Maine hospitals, birth centers, midwives, and adoption agencies. Is available at no cost to all health care providers in Maine who see children between the     ages of birth and 5 years. Is a community partnership and works with other child health and community literacy initiatives. A statewide advisory committee helps coordinate these activities. Is a collaboration of Maine's two largest health care delivery systems, MaineHealth and Eastern Maine Healthcare.

MaineHealth and Eastern Maine Healthcare collaborate to implement the program.  Many collaborative efforts with organizations, social service agencies, etc. across Maine.

Program Description:

Literacy Volunteers provide training for individuals wishing to tutor other individuals to read. Tutors then are matched with a student to assist in the learning process. Some locations have Teen Tutoring Programs in area schools.

Child Care Options is a resource and referral service for families seeking childcare in Kennebec and Somerset Counties. They offer subsidies for families who need assistance in paying for child care. Child Care Options also offers a technical assistance service for businesses and individuals on various childcare issues. The Barbara Bush Foundation provides age-appropriate books to pediatric offices throughout the United States. Children receive a book at each well-baby physical starting at two-months old through the child's fifth birthday.  The books provide enrichment for a child; while at the same time, positively reinforcing with a clear statement, that reading and other early literacy activities are important family values.
