The Need for Cultural
Understanding
Here and Abroad
"Knowledge of basic business and social
etiquette translates into business power, an improved bottom line and
personal success in today's highly competitive business arena."
Janis Cross, Business Etiquette and
Protocol Consultant
We are reminded every day in all forms of communications that we, the
citizens of the United states, are living in a global economy and society.
Even if one is not representing a business or agency overseas, countless
people from abroad are coming the the United States to assess and often
purchase products and services. One may have contact with them regardless
of the positions held in a company or agency. How the visitors from abroad
are greeted and treated from their initial contact to the end of their
stay can make a difference in an employer's success or failure in securing
a business agreement
Also, many people from other lands continue to come to settle in the United
States. We find ourselves living or working side-by-side with those from
various cultures. Having knowledge of their culture and customs help us
to understand and feel comfortable with them to create harmony in theirs
and our daily lives.
It is no longer enough to be savvy about products, technology, or services
to assure success in this global economy. Essential for success, both
here and abroad are good business and social etiquette. Businesses from
the United States have lost millions of dollars in contract negotiations
with those from other countries because of their representatives' poor
behavior and lack of knowledge and sensitivity of the culture, customs,
protocol, or etiquette of the host country.
